Kvass is a typical fermented drink traditionally made from black rye bread. In 2008 Coca-Cola launched its own brand of kvass in Russia “Kruzhka i Bochka”, becoming the first foreign company to make a significant entry into this very specific market in Russia. Building on its success in the Russian market, Coca-Cola bought the Ukrainian brand “Yarilo”, and started producing Kvass in Ukraine at Zaporizhzya in 2009. Coca-Cola’s R&D teams have teamed up with our brewhouse experts to design a new “Kvass” concentrate production technology in Ukraine. In 2010, Coca-Cola signed a contract with Meura for an industrial plant for the production of kvass concentrate. The equipment installation project started at the end of 2011 and the first brew was produced at the end of 2012, as planned. The final installation and acceptance took place in less than two months for this turnkey production unit, which is considered an Industrial prototype. With a unique taste and aroma of crispy rye bread, “Kruzhka i Bochka” combines the traditional taste of kvass with the quality of drinks produced by the multinational.

Kvas was first mentioned in Old Russian Chronicles in the year 989. Kvas has been consumed in most Slavic countries including Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland as well as in ex-Soviet states since ancient times. In Russia kvas is used in some cold soup recipes such as okroshka, an ancient Russian dish made with vegetables and cold boiled meat and/or fish. Commercial kvas is occasionally mixed with other soft drinks, carbonated water and flavorings. The Russian company Nikola has promoted its brand of kvas with an advertising campaign emphasizing "anti cola-nisation." At an international soft drink contest held in Yugoslavia in 1975, Russian kvas received 18 points while another well-known drink, Coca-Cola, received only 9.8 points. Kvas has very low alcohol content and it is considered a non-alcoholic drink. Kvas is considered to be a good appetizer and healthy source of energy. In some countries one can still see kvas vendors on the streets. Kvas has a high content of vitamin B.
