Kefir is a richer source of lactic acid bacteria. You could think of kefir as a drinkable probiotic supplement, and kombucha as more of a digestive aid. Milk kefir also contains a good amount of calcium, while water-based kefir and kombucha do not. However, I would not recommend kombucha to clients with candida. And I'd caution against kombucha and kefir for pregnant women and immunocompromised folks. Both kombucha and kefir start off with a sugar-containing liquid and a SCOBY culture in order to kick off fermentation. Meaning they both contain beneficial bacteria for gut health. The best types of water-based kefir are made from coconut water sans added sweeteners. As a guideline, I'd stick to kefirs and kombuchas with no more than four or six grams of sugar per cup.

Kefir is higher in calories, protein, fat, carbs, fibre and sugar and has a slightly higher alcohol content, as it ferments very quickly compared to Kombucha. Kefir and kombucha are both types of fermented drinks. Overall, both Kefir and Kombucha are healthy options that offer many amazing benefits. Kombucha is best known to promote a healthy gut and digestion, and it’s low in sugar, around 3g per 100ml compared with typical soft drinks. Many people claim that Kefir improves their digestion, which may be down to the probiotics creating a healthy balance in the gut. The best way to decide which you prefer is to try them both and see which suits you and your body most.

Water kefir can be fairly sweet, depending on the sugar used for culturing. However, water kefir contains a greater number of bacteria strains than those found in kombucha. Both beverages are beneficial in aiding natural systems of the body, and both are great for hydration. Depending on your needs, consuming one or both is a matter of individual taste.
