All lenses have a minimum focus distance and most can focus all the way to infinity. The closest focus of the Nikon 85mm f/1.8G is 2.6 ft (0.8m). With a depth of field calculator at f/4 and a subject distance of 20 ft, the depth of field would be a bit over 2.5 ft. That will vary depending on if you have a full frame sensor, your subject distance and your aperture.

To get a full body shot with the 85, I'd say you're looking at being about 20 feet away. Minimum focusing distance on the 85mm is listed at 3ft, but in practice you can get a few inches closer. Are you asking that on a 1.6x sensor, can you get close enough with the 85/1.8 to get shoulder and up portraits? You most certainly can. Here is a cat portrait at about a foot away from the closest focusing distance so you can see how close you can get with the 85/1.8. I have taken others with just the cat's head in the frame, so you should have no problem with people. This is my technique for getting good face shots with the 85mm/1.8: 1. Go real close and press the shutter half way to check the focus indicator light, which will say it is not able to get a good focus because you are too close. 2. Start moving back a little by little till the focus indicator light turn on without flickering. 3. A couple of inches behind this final focal plane will give you great face shots without back focussing issues.
